Using UBike is fun and easy! Choose the membership plan that works best for you, create your account, and then you’re ready to ride. Remember to always wear a helmet, do a pre-ride check out, and know the rules of the road before starting your ride.
Riding your UBike
UBikes are user friendly 3-speed bikes featuring solar powered front and rear lights, a bell, and a easy step-through design. UBikes may be ridden virtually anywhere On and Off Grounds, but bikes should always be returned to UBike hubs located throughout Central Grounds and the UVa Health System.
Returning your UBike
UBikes should always be returned and securely locked at one of the UBike hubs in the System Area. Users who lock a UBike outside of a hub will be charged a $5 service fee. UBikes locked outside of the System Area will be charged a $50 retrieval fee. See a UBike outside a hub? Users return a UBike from outside a hub back to a hub receive a $3 “thank you!” credit.
The System Area Map is displayed on this UBike website. UBikes may be ridden outside the System Area for a quick shopping trip or a bite to eat, but to avoid extra fees users should securely lock the UBike and place it “On Hold” so that your UBike will be available for you to return to a UBike hub.
Reporting Damage or Maintenance Required
Always do a pre-ride inspection when using UBike. If you notice damage, or maintenance needs, press the “Repair” button on the UBike keypad. This will alert our maintenance team and take the UBike offline. Do not ride a UBike that is damaged or is need of repair. Please use the next available UBike. UBike damage or maintenance needs may also be reported to email@example.com.

HOW DO I RESERVE A UBIKE?
UBikes do not need to be reserved in advance. However, users may reserve a UBike up to 15 minutes in advance by using the website (app.socialbicycles.com) or the mobile app (“Social Bicycles”). Online, go to app.socialbicycles.com, login, select a bike on the map, and click “Rent.” On the app, select a bike by tapping any bike icon on the map and tapping the arrow that pops up. Tap “Rent a bike” at the bottom of the screen.
Please note that the 15 minute reservation/hold time counts toward your daily time allowance.
HOW DO I UNLOCK A UBIKE?
To unlock a bike, use the keypad on the bike to type in your 6-digit account number and hit the green check mark; then type in your 4-digit PIN and hit the green check mark. Remove the UBar and place it in the holster on the side of the bike, and enjoy your ride! Alternatively, you may pick up a free RFID member card at the ID Office located in O-Hill, which you simply touch to the bike’s computer and then enter your 4-digit PIN.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PUT A UBIKE ON HOLD?
Putting your UBike on hold means you aren’t ready to relinquish your reservation yet, but you need to hop off your bike to run an errand. Placing a bike on hold keeps the bike under your name and allows you to lock it somewhere secure.
To put the bike on hold, press the “Hold” button on the keypad. Then, lock the bike to a bicycle rack by inserting the U-lock into the frame. Make sure the bike registers the hold. Your “hold” time counts toward your daily time. There is a maximum time limit for the hold function (check the timer on the bike). If you exceed this time limit, the bike will go into a regular locked state and will be available for other users.
CAN I RIDE THE UBIKES OFF GROUNDS?
Yes! UBikes can be ridden wherever you like in the Charlottesville community. However, UBikes must be returned to Grounds and locked at a UBike hub, or you will be assessed certain fees (see “Pricing” section).
CAN I PARK THE UBIKES OFF GROUNDS?
You can put a UBike “on hold” when you are biking off Grounds (meaning you aren’t ready to relinquish your reservation but you need to lock the bike somewhere secure while you complete an errand), but all UBikes must be returned to Grounds and locked at a UBike hub at the end of your ride. *Please be sure to lock the UBike in a secure location when you place it on hold. Lost of stolen bikes are the financial responsibility of the user.*
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF A UBIKE HUB IS FULL?
If you arrive at your destination and the UBike hub is full, first check nearby stations for empty racks. Most stations are fairly close together (see full station map here). If you absolutely cannot find a space at a UBike hub, please lock the bike to a standard bicycle rack. UBikes locked in non-hub spaces will be charged a $5 fee.
DO I HAVE TO RETURN THE UBIKE TO THE SAME HUB WHERE I PICKED IT UP?
No, you do not need to return the UBike to the same hub where you picked it up. You may return your UBike to any of the 18 hubs within the UBike system.
CAN I PARK MY PERSONAL BIKE AT A UBIKE HUB?
No, you may not park your personal bike at UBike hubs. Non-UBikes parked at UBike hubs will be impounded. If your bike has been impounded, please contact the UVa Department of Parking & Transportation at 434-924-7231. Please note, there will be a $25 fee to retrieve your impounded bike. Impounded bikes will be held for a maximum of 120 days.
WHY ISN’T THERE A HUB NEAR MY DESTINATION? HOW DO I REQUEST A NEW HUB?
In planning the UBike system, a great deal of time was spent considering rebalancing. Rebalancing, also referred to as redistribution, of bike share systems is the largest on-going operating cost of most systems. To mitigate some of these costs, hubs have been strategically placed to support enhanced mobility around Grounds, rather than commuter behaviors. As an example, most hubs were not placed near commuting parking lots or residence halls. If they had been, those bikes would all move into the central core of the University in the morning, requiring a great deal of rebalancing to ensure other users would have access to the bikes. Most hubs are at key destinations around Grounds so that users can more easily move between highly desired destinations, rather than between Grounds and their residence or a commuter parking lot.
However, in the future, we hope to expand the UBike system to include more hubs and a broader coverage of Grounds and the surrounding areas. If you have a suggestion or request for placing a new hub, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY UBIKE BREAKS OR GETS DAMAGED?
You have three options for reporting a broken or damaged UBike:
- Keypad: If you encounter a flat tire or any other mechanical problem, please press the “Repair” button on the keypad and make sure the bike is securely locked at a hub.
- Web: You can indicate a broken bike online (app.socialbicycles.com) by clicking “Report a problem with this bike” in the Active Booking window. You will see a prompt to identify the mechanical problem, enter any additional details, and then click “Submit report.”
- Mobile: You can report a repair through your mobile app by clicking “Report a problem with this bike” under your active rental. You can indicate the type of mechanical failure, describe what the problem is, and then click “Submit report.”

The University of Virginia Department of Parking and Transportation (P&T) is pleased to offer bike share to the UVa community.
The UBike program is the result of a multi-year team collaboration between P&T and the UVa Office of the Architect, partially funded by VDOT Transportation Enhancement grants. The initial concept for bike share at UVa was developed by students in the McIntire School of Commerce.

Follow the rules of the road
Wear a helmet
Wear a helmet whenever you ride. Always buckle the strap. Replace your helmet after any crash and whenever you see signs of damage. Avoid these common helmet mistakes
Do a pre-ride check
Check the bike’s tire pressure, try the grip bell, and if you’re riding at night check that the front and rear lights are illuminated.
Plan a sensible route
Plan your route before you ride to follow the safest route to get you where you want to go. You can use our app to find your way to a bike you’ve reserved or to a hub when you want to end your ride.
Follow the rules
Yield to pedestrians. Stop at all red lights and stop signs. Ride in the direction of traffic. Use the grip bell to signal your presence. Do not wear more than one earphone while riding.
Make it easy for the other traffic around you. Don’t make unexpected turns that put yourself and others in danger. Ride at a steady pace so other vehicles can anticipate your movement.
Tips for turns
Use hand signals to let drivers and other cyclists know your intention to turn or to stop. Don’t turn or change lanes without knowing the position of the cars and bikes around you.
Helmet discount – 15% off the purchase of a helmet at Blue Ridge Cyclery with membership confirmation email.
